How many times have you heard friends or colleagues or family members or yourself say, “I’ve tried to convince the person so many times on this idea, but fail to do so.” Sounds familiar?

Have you ever evaluated why does that happen to you or others? Is it because the other party has not bought into your vision or is it because you fail to keep your commitment? In other words, have you failed to live up to your word innumerable number of times that the person doesn’t trust you enough, to buy into your vision?

Failing to keep your commitments is an indication that you don’t care about your vision, or word, your client, their time, and the outcomes.

Questions you need to ask yourself when your actions are not in sync with your word are:

  1. Do you have a clear goal and vision
  2. Are you trying to pursue one too many goals or things to do at the same time
  3. Are you trying to get some brownie points by agreeing to do something but have no real intention of doing it
  4. Are you trying to avoid a situation of open communication and dealing with the situation
  5. Have you prioritized your goals or list of activities
  6. Have you learnt the art of saying no to competing activities
  7. Have you made a conscious effort to set aside time to put some thoughts into your goal, your vision, how will it add value to your audience
  8. Have you prepared by planning ahead and worked out the mechanics
  9. Have you panned out the specific steps to be taken to make progress and finally achieve your end goal
  10. Do you tend to shirk responsibility when it comes to taking action
  11. Do you tend to take set backs too hard and give up too soon and accept failure?
  12. If you have been sincere in following up and following through your word, have you asked and listened to the feedback from the client or target audience
  13. Have you incorporated the feedback and made changes where necessary
  14. Have you been over aggressive in setting a time line for completion?
  15. Do you tend to over promise and under deliver

Remember you are only as good as your word and actions that match your word.  You are diluting your personal branding every time you fail on your commitment.  Here is a video on Keeping Your Word.

If you still have issues in keeping your commitment, have you thought about getting the help of a Coach who can be your sounding board and enable you to make sustained improvements.
