Four Keys To The Power Of Consistency
Recently at my yoga and gym classes at Pure Yoga and Pure Fitness, I have observed that the different instructors follow a sequence in a particular week, which is consistent throughout that week, for that particular style of class.
Not every class of the same style [e.g. TRX (suspension training) or Body Combat or RPM] has every single move and flow the same across different days and instructors in a particular week. But there are some moves common across the same class on different days during any given week. This consistency brings uniformity across classes and you as a participant is able to practice it consistently and improve your way of doing it. In addition, the instructors don’t play what they want but send a uniform and consistent message. Each instructor is unique and with the consistency that they follow, it becomes easier for the participants as well as for the instructors to deliver their best. Thus the brand name and franchise value is enhanced.
I appreciate consistency, especially as a Dale Carnegie trainer, because as Dale Carnegie trainers, when we deliver flagship programs and other tailored in-house corporate programs, we need to maintain consistency in the overall way we facilitate and train. Within our consistency, we bring in our creativity and presence to what is happening in the room to deliver in such a way that it meets and exceeds the desired expectations of the client concerned. This is important for the Dale Carnegie franchise, because they are the Global Training company that is ISO certified. It also impacts the wow experience that the participants get in every training.
Consistency is an important trait in a leader and yet one which is often overlooked and undermined.
Consistent according to the Business Dictionary means
Logically ordered and/or following the same pattern. For example, a salesperson’s growth is usually consistent with his or her company’s earnings. Unchanging; steady. For example, a person that arrives exactly 5 minutes early to work every day is consistently punctual or on-time. Being in conformity with a set of rules, guidelines or policies. Television stations, for example, need to be consistent with FCC regulations in order to be allowed to broadcast.
We live in a dynamic world and uncertainty is part of the world we live in. Too many uncertainties in our day-to-day life creates a threat in our brain increasing the cortisol levels, which in excess, is not good for our overall being and living.
If you are not self-aware, nor self-manage yourself and aware about others emotions, your EI is unpredictable and inconsistent. Consistency in your EI is imperative in building your team and achieving your vision.
Why is consistency in behavior important in leaders?
1.Builds Trust
Credibility is built from your track record of what you have done and how you have done and when this track record is consistently good, it builds trust. You or your company cannot establish your track record if you are constantly changing gears according to your whim and fancy and without valid reasons.
When it comes to your behavior with your team and those with whom you co-create and navigate with, consistency helps you build rapport and gain trust .
2.Measures
In life and at work, what cannot be measured cannot be managed. We are judged by the results we produce and unless and until we do things consistently to produce the desired results, effectiveness of who we are or what we do cannot be measured. Inconsistent behavior and action results in people trying to second guess you and what you do, thus wasting their time, in turn decreasing your effectiveness as a leader.
3.Shows Accountability
A leader needs to be responsible and accountable. If you are expecting your team and people whom you work with to deliver on their goals consistently, you need to be consistent in your behavior and in what you do. Accountability is created when you give feedback to your team with care and candor and in the way you track progress and results.
4. Creates Relevance
When you are consistent in your behavior, your commitment, in your message and in the way you do things, people will respect you and your integrity is maintained. Your reputation is built in a good way with people around you. Consistency in your behaviors and actions thus will serve as a role model for your team.
Erratic volatility and downturn in the markets is not something any of us can handle as we have seen time and again in the past several years. The same goes with human behaviour and actions.
Consistency in the way you are and what you do becomes an inspiration helps you to overcome hurdles and move your life forward.
